Major improvement work to ease access to Swindon and North Wiltshire, reduce congestion at junction 16 and reduce queuing on the M4, which we are carrying out on behalf of Swindon Borough Council, is progressing well.  As part of the project we will be widening Hay Lane and require a night-time closure to safely carry out the following work:

  • Removal of part of the existing carriageway to tie the new construction into the existing
  • Installation of new drainage, including new gullies.

The road closure will be in place for one night on Saturday, 16th September between 20:00 hrs and 06:00 hrs.

How will this affect you?

The road closure will be from Spittleborough Roundabout to the junction with Wharf Road. Access to properties will be maintained and will be from the Wharf Road end of the closure.

The signed diversion routes will be as detailed in the attached maps. Please note that high sided vehicles are required to take an alternative route, to avoid the low bridge on the A3102.

Additional overnight closures will be needed to carry out surfacing at Hay Lane and the M4 eastbound exit slip road.  These are currently expected to take place during the weeks commencing 25th September and 2nd October, and, once these dates are confirmed, advance warning signs will be in place to advise you of specific dates.

We recognise that the nature of construction work can often be disruptive and that some disturbance is unavoidable, but trust you will appreciate the benefits of the works once complete. Where possible we encourage you to check before you travel and allow a little extra time for your journeys.  If you would like to find out more about the project, or receive the latest news relating to the works at Junction 16, please visit
