Road Works M4, Junction 15
Friday, October 20th, 2017

The Town Council has received notification of a road closure which could potentially affect residents and those who work in Royal Wootton Bassett. Please find the information below.

“Kier Highways, on behalf of Highways England, will be resurfacing sections of the roundabout at junction 15 to address surface defects (e.g. potholes and low skid resistance areas). This work is to ensure the network remains in a safe condition for our customers.

In order to carry out the work as efficiently and safely as possible, we’ll need to close the eastern and western sides of the roundabout non-consecutively. We recognise that this is a busy junction, and therefore all work will be carried out overnight, between 10pm and 6am, when traffic flows are at their lowest”.

During the closures, clearly signed diversions will be in place via the M4 Junctions 14 and 16 (see map).

Stone Poppy Update
Thursday, October 19th, 2017

This morning (19th October 2017) the Town Council received reports that the Stone Poppy was subject to significant damage overnight.  After reviewing the CCTV footage, we are able to confirm that at 04.47am, the sculpture collapsed.  The damage has not been caused as a result of vandalism.  The Police attended this morning to cordon off the area – please avoid approaching the site for safety reasons.

The Mayor of Royal Wootton Bassett, Councillor Steve Bucknell, has said “We are shocked and saddened about the damage to the Poppy, and are currently looking into the cause”.

Mark Humphrey, the artist who designed the Poppy stated “‘We are all understandably upset by this unexpected news. I have visited the Poppy and I am committed, together with the Council, to find a resolution as the Poppy has become a treasured addition to the community.”
