The Economic Development Working Party was set up in September 2011, as the Town Council were concerned with the imminent closure of RAF Lyneham in 2012 and its impact on the local economy, as there would be a few years before the plans for a new MOD Technical Training College be built in its place.
With five Town Councillors, representatives from Royal Wootton Bassett Chamber of Commerce, Royal Wootton Bassett Business Association, local Property Agent, working in partnership to support and develop strategies for the long-term future of our town.
Royal Wootton Bassett made an application to become one of the 12 Mary Portas Pilot schemes. The Government set aside one million pounds to support these Pilots; competition was fierce with some 370 applicants.
The Royal Wootton Bassett bid built on the strong traditional foundations already present in our High Street, whilst exploring ideas to bring this to a 21st Century audience, with the convenience of modern technology. In addition to the bid document itself, applicants were required to make a short YouTube video to promote their idea, we hope you enjoy ours.

Although we were unsuccessful in both rounds, we did become one of only four Wiltshire Towns, who secured £10,000 from the Department of Communities and Local Government [DCLG], for our newly formed Town Team to spend on projects to support our local High Street.
A newly formed group with representatives from the Royal Wootton Bassett Business Association, Royal Wootton Bassett Chamber of Commerce and Town Councillors who currently looking at improving signage around the High Street and designs for a new Town/Business Directory Sign. So watch this space.
The Economic Development Working Party felt it was important to understand what was happening to the High Street. So in 2012, commissioned Action for Market Towns [AMTi] to carry out a Benchmarking Survey; to measure the performance of our High Street against 11Key Performance Indicators. A complete report was received in January 2013.
