Allotments

Since taking on the Church Street Allotments in November 2020, the Town Council has striven to ensure a smooth handover in management of this invaluable community asset. Having existed in the town for several decades, the allotments give so much pleasure, social interaction, physical and mental well-being and so we have aimed to implement improvement works to make the allotments even more enjoyable and accessible for all.
Officers began mapping the allotments which turned out to be no easy feat! With help of plot holders, who marked their boundaries, we were able to produce and accurate and in-depth map of the area and issue brand new plot numbers. From this map the Council has been able to establish an effective administration system, to ensure its smooth running moving forward.
Over the summer, skips have been present at the allotments and a large clean up began. Old sheds, rubbish and waste were cleared from the site, with help from the grounds maintenance team, to clear overgrowing foliage from plots and boundaries.
An allotment working group, consisting of town councillors has been set up, who are very keen to work alongside allotment holders and will aim to bring further improvements to the site, including that of establishing an allotment holder run committee.
We look forward to what the 2022 season has in store!
