Christmas Lights & Shopping Event 2021
Royal Wootton Bassett Town Council has made the decision to continue planning for its annual Christmas Lights event this December.
The annual event which offers free, local, festive entertainment, brings joy to many local residents and supports local businesses and charities.
The decision to proceed with plans, was considered carefully at length during Thursday’s Amenities Meeting, but much like that of other local councils it was far from straightforward given the pandemic.
For Royal Wootton Bassett Town Council, the key question considered was whether to:
- go ahead in support of businesses, charities and community, with vaccines in place, whilst knowing that Covid still remains a risk and social distancing is not possible;
- or to cancel in order to protect residents, whilst not being sure as to whether social distancing will even be needed in December and not being able to offer needed support to businesses, charities and community.
At the meeting it was resolved that it should continue with its plans for the event, whilst staggering it’s spend and keeping the decision under review.
Plans will now progress until the next meeting on 2nd September 2021 when they will be reviewed again, with the final decision made at the 4th November 2021 Amenities meeting.
Stall holders considering whether to book may be reassured to learn that, full refunds will be given to them in the event of cancellation.
Chair Cllr Sue Hughes Said:
“Making the best future decision is not easy, so we move cautiously forwards armed with only what we understand now and in hope that we can run this event for our community.”
