Commemorative Oak to mark Platinum Jubilee

PRESS RELEASE
25 May 2022

Royal Wootton Bassett is marking her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee and 70 years of service, with the planting of a commemorative Jubilee Oak tree, at Marlowe Way, Royal Wootton Bassett on the 1st of June 2022.

The Jubilee Oak Dedication ceremony will take place at 2pm on Wednesday 1st of June 2022, will be adorned with a plaque to mark the auspicious occasion and be unveiled by the town’s Mayor, Councillor Pat Farrow.

Also in attendance will be members of the town’s community groups, business, young people and residents, who are most warmly welcomed to attend.

This commemorative event, will also serve to mark the start of extensive tree planting within the town, forming both a part of both the Queen’s Canopy and the town’s commitment to support the environment through initiatives such as re-wilding.

Of note, is that such tree planting continue a long history in the Royal town which began with the planting of Plane trees along with the High Street in 1897, to mark Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee.

Further, that the planting of trees links back to the name of Royal Wootton Bassett, from which ‘Wootton’ derives from a ‘settlement near a wood’.

Mayor, Councillor Pat Farrow said “We are privileged to be able to mark her Majesties Jubilee and delighted that we can do so with and Oak that represents both her long reign, steadfastness and desire to support the environment. More so since this reflects the desires of our council and community to protect and enhance our natural environment”.
