Mayor’s Civic Service
On Sunday 24th October 2021, the Mayor Councillor Steve Walls, celebrated his Civic Service in St Bartholomew’s & All Saints Church with community groups and local organisations, Councillors and Dignitaries, all greeted by a guard of honour from the Royal Wootton Bassett Sea Cadets.
The theme was ‘Celebrating Community’ which was an uplifting service thanking those who made an impact helping others during the pandemic.
The Reverend Canon Jane Curtis led the afternoon service with prayers, poems and hymns. Guests were treated to a wonderful performance from The Civic Singers, a children’s choir, arranged by community musician Lisa Williams.
The first song performed by the choir, ‘Together’ was specially commissioned by Wiltshire Music Connect in response to the challenges and experiences of the Covid-19 restrictions, to support school recovery plans. Our thanks to Wiltshire Music Connect for giving permission to sing the song.
The second song ‘Soon May The Helpers Come’ was sang in the style of a traditional sea shanty with the words written by both the Mayor himself and Lisa Williams.
The Mayor presented his ‘Mayor’s Community Award’ to local groups and organisations to pay thanks for their work in supporting the community over the period of Covid-19, which enabled residents to continue with their lives in safety. Representatives of the Covid-19 mutual aid group, local police, fire station, schools, care homes and doctor surgeries were all presented with certificates.
The service ended with a delicious buffet provided by Delicias Catering and a chance for all who attended to reflect on what the Mayor wanted it to be an uplifting and joyful service. The service raised £170 for the Mayor’s Benevolent Fund.
The Town Council would have loved to extended the invitation to all the community, regrettably due to restrictions in numbers still in place for events such as this, the service was restricted to invitation only.
