The Town Council purchased four Speed Indicator Devices (SID); two in late 2024 (Marlborough Road and Whitehill Lane) and added another two (Noremarsh Road and Stoneover Lane) in early 2025. All four roads post a 30mph speed limit.

They were bought using Community Infrastructure Levy funds.

This initiative is part of Royal Wootton Bassett Town Council’s ongoing commitment to creating safer, more welcoming streets for everyone, as SIDs are a proven way to improve road safety.

JUNE 2026

There are some quite complex rules that govern where SIDs can be located – not too close to other street signs, junctions, or places where they would distract drivers.

While the SID shows speeds to drivers approaching from one direction only, the device actually measuresspeeds travelling in both directions. We can change the direction in which the display flashes.

The data from the units are sent to Wiltshire Police for review. The Police analyse the data and decide whether to undertake separate enforcement activity, such as speed checks that can result in prosecution.

These reports also helps us to decide whether to; ask Wiltshire Council for support with monitoring speeds, such as carry out a metro count (traffic survey request), review speed limits; ask Wiltshire Police to set up speed watch locations; or where appropriate make other recommendations related to road safety, either through Royal Wootton Bassett & Cricklade Local Highway and Footway Improvement Group or other Wiltshire Council related departments.

In July 2026, the Town Council carried out their first annual review of SID data collected. A brief report, outlining operational changes and other actions taken resulting from this review, was noted at a Full Council meeting and is available to view on our website.
