Speed Indicator Devices

The first Speed Indicator Devices (SIDs) in Royal Wootton Bassett

At the Full Council Meeting on Thursday 14th March 2024, Councillors approved the purchase of two SID units to help address concerns of speeding in our town, helping to deliver one of our key objectives; Healthy and Safe in Bassett. The council authorised the Chief Officer to proceed with the procurement and implementation of the units. These devices run on solar power and are designed so we can move them to other approved locations in the town.

Following concerns raised by residents, and supported by the Town Council, Wiltshire Council undertook traffic surveys on Whitehill Lane and Marlborough Road, recording speeding taking place that was eligible for intervention; the Council therefore agreed the units would be initially installed on these two roads. Working in partnership, Wiltshire Council have installed two anchor points and poles on the grass verges to fit the units, and Town Council Grounds Team have undertaken the necessary training to safely mount the units and collect the data.

The units are registered with Wiltshire Police, which enables the council to collect data monthly, send the data to the Police, where it is analysed, and then the Roads Policing Unit will carry out targeted enforcement activity.

We hope the residents of Marlborough Road and Whitehill Lane begin to see a difference in drivers’ behaviour, with a reduction in speeding vehicles along these roads.
